Controlling the middle.

Janine Haines was the first Australian Democrat to enter the Senate in December 1977. She became the first Australian woman to lead an Australian political party when she took leadership of the Australian Democrats in 1986. Under her leadership in March 1990 the Democrats held the balance of power in the Senate and both the major political parties (the leaders of which can be seen on opposite sides of the divide), were seeking their support.
