The Australian Open Golf Tournament was defended by the incumbent Gold Jacket holder - Greg Norman - At the same time Prime Minister Bob Hawke was having trouble with the results of the de-regulation of Australia's commercial airlines. Pilot groups were still disaffected after treatment of them in the 1989 pilot's strike where they worked the 9am to 5pm rule after criticism by Bob Hawke and his government.The new Compass Airlines had a start-stop-start commencement and existing airlines were all jockeying for their share of the market.
