Rising interest rates in 1989 after lavish life style choices proved problematic for Christopher Skase and his Quintex Group with over stretched investments. Skase had demanded that the Quintex Board pay $13.5 million to a private company he owned. The Board refused but the money had already been withdrawn, thus began the debacle that ended in ruin, and Skase and his wife fleeing overseas.

Footscray Football Club - The Western Bulldogs reached their lowest point in the 1989 season - with officials, players and fans almost in despair.
