Look out!

It was the Australian Tennis Open Championships in Melbourne. Australian champion Pat Cash was about to play Stefan Edberg in the 16th round.

Host State Victoria had as Opposition Liberal leader Jeff Kennett and was lead by Labor Premier John Cain who was beset by the troubles at the time in management of the Victorian Economic Development Corporation which have been described as 'a financial bushfire' (Paulo Strangio 'The Victorian Premiers 1856 - 2006'). Cain's Deputy Premier Robert Fordham was sacked on February 1 and this promoted Joan Kirner as Victoria's first woman to take the office of Deputy Premier.
