As Col. Muammer el-Qaddafi spoke to Libyans and hid their losses in the war against Chad the Hawke Government was expressing concern about the intentions of Libyan activities in the South Pacific region. This lead to the closure of the Libyan Embassy in Australia and diplomats were sent home on May 20th, 1987.
