Iran-Contra scandal has its first casualty.
President Ronald Reagan and USSR General Secretary Mikhail
Gorbachev
look "angelic" as the Iran-Contra scandal deepens.
The scorched rock in the left corner is the Earth...
This cartoon was done as "pocket" accompanying an article concerning CIA
Director William Casey, 73, who was rushed to hospital having had a "mild
cerebral seizure" and became the
first major casualty of the Iran-Contra arms scandal. Mr Casey was due to
testify before the Senate intelligence committee. Amongst the revelations
being investigated was that the US had been simultaneously selling weapons
to Iran and military intelligence to Iraq in order to end the six-year Gulf
war, and that a US military attache was arrested in Kuwait on suspicion of
trying to get information on Soviet made weapons for Iraq passing through
Kuwait.
