A problem with waste!

John Howard first led the Liberal Party from 1985 - 1989. To the background of a "waste watch" being conducted on costs associated with running Parliament House in Canberra, in March 1986 it appeared a challenge to his leadership was imminent as he was losing ground electorally and in his own party for his style of leadership and what many regarded as a dry economic policy.

He regained the leadership in 1995 and went on to be successfully elected as Prime Minister.
