Rise and shine!

The move to disengage the ties between legislature and judiciary of Australia and The United Kingdom still had two years to go (see Australia Act 1986), but in 1984, Republicanism was on the agenda and some trade unions wanted to be sure the public holiday which is always given on 2nd Monday in June to honour the sovereign's birthday was maintained.

The Eureka flag has been used by many groups in the cause of Republicanism and the Union movement. Norm Gallagher (in the portrait) was Secretary of The Builders Labourers' Union.
