Prime Minister Bob Hawke was desperate to reform the Australian car industry which featured the manufacture of far too many brands of car and extensive protectionism of unions and tariffs. Eventually the Button Plan consolidated the manufacture of six makes of car and tariffs were more equable with the needs of Australian production.
