Picking a winner.

United States President Ronald Reagan had been dealing with troubles in Lebanon, Grenada and El Salvador. Meanwhile Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke and his Treasurer Paul Keating had worked out the coffers were a bit on the bare side, and may well have been looking for some help!

The Melbourne Cup, always held on the first Tuesday in November, was won in 1983 by New Zealand horse Kiwi.

One further note, in these days of Daylight Saving, the race is now run at 3.20 PM.
