It was the last month of a hot, dry and drought effected summer in Australia. Unemployment was rising because of lack of jobs. Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser wanted agreement for the Federal Government's National Wage Freeze among other economic policies. He announced a Federal election on 3rd February. Bob Hawke became leader of the Labor Opposition on February 8th.
