Don't cry for me Argentina...

Against the backdrop of phased Israeli withdrawal from Sinai, the Multinational Force and Observers was established as the result of the signing of Protocol of the Treaty of Peace. The MFO was created outside the United Nations framework after the President of the UN Security Council said that the UN could not provide such a peacekeeping force. Several nations were involved with Australia and New Zealand contributing a combined helicopter squadron to the force.

The reference to Argentina was a result of the musical "Evita" which won the Tony Award in 1980. At the same time as the events unfolded in Sinai, press reports from Argentina spoke of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo who marched peacefully on April 30th. The group were still waiting for news of their sons and daughters who went missing after the 1976 military coup.
