In a time of political turmoil for Australian politicians the recently elected Bob Hawke and Opposition Leader Bill Hayden openly disagreed about the form of Australia's commitment to a multi-national peace keeping force in the Sinai.

On this day, 28th may Premier of Victoria Rupert 'Dick' Hamer had announced his resignation for retirement on June 5 quoting unity of the Victorian Liberal Party as one of his reasons. Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser had also been faced with the deposition of the New South Wales Leader, John Mason, which was announced on 29th May.
