On 10th May, 1981 Francois Mitterrand became the first Socialist President of France. He maintained the Presidency then 1981 - 1995.

Famous for his love of France and conservative attitudes General Charles de Gaulle was President of France from 8th January, 1959 and died in office on 9th November, 1970.
