The shutdown of the New South Wales Pagewood Holden GMH production plant focussed the problems of Australia's automotive industry in 1980. Despite the Button plan which helped subsidize the car making industry Holden GMH gradually became more reliant on overseas sources including Japan, Germany,Korea, for engines design and parts. After many investment packages from quite a few Governments GMH announced in 2020 that Holden Brand would be retired in 2021.
