Events of the times impinged on the lives of many people. Many nations had threatened boycotts of the Olympic Games in Moscow later in the year. The USSR had invaded Afghanistan, Ayatollah Khomeini had become the Supreme Leader of a theocratic regime in Iran, and fifty-two US hostages were being held in the US Embassy in Tehran.
