Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser and other world leaders approved as Zimbabwe-Rhodesia gained independence from the United Kingdom on 18th April, 1980. Inaugural President Robert Mugabe of ZANU-PF continued on as president for over 28 years as constitutional changes effected on 1st January, 1988 abolished the position of Prime Minister.
