February 1979 saw the exile of the Shah of Iran and the return from
exile of Shiite Mullah, Ayottollah Khomeini, who became Iran's supreme leader
and established an Islamic Republic. When the Shah was allowed into the
United States in November 1979 Iranian millitants stormed the US embassy in
Tehran and took 66 people hostage, a majority of them US citizens. Soon after
Iran's interim government resigned on mass feeling they were unable to
meet their duties and the country appeared to be falling into the control of
militant organisations largely interested in pursuing a continued and aggressive
policy of anti-westernization within Iran as well as continual anti-western
rhetoric outside of Iran - regardless of what the possible consequences may
have been.
