Decision Time
The year began with the return of the Shia fundamentalist Ayatollah
Khomeini to Iran to lead the revolution already in progress against The
Shah. Khomeini became 'Leader of the Revolution' and 'Supreme Spiritual Leader'
with the power to indirectly influence the approval of those who stood for
election to public office. At the end of the year Pope John Paul II visited
Dimitrios I, Patriarch of Constantinople to demonstrate a move towards
ecumenism, reconciliation and unity between Eastern and Western Christian
Churches.
Dimitrios I later returned the visit in 1987.
