Not just for the sights.

The Northern Territory had gained self government on July 1st, 1978. In October plans for the first Casinos at Darwin and Alice Springs were accepted in tenders from Federal Hotels.

On 13th November 1978 the Australian Navy escorted and helped 38 people on board the small boat Hong Hai to land at Darwin. They were the first of the Vietnamese "boat people" to be granted refugee status in Australia. By the end of November the number of such refugees was starting to grow worldwide and the UN announced a conference at the Hague to be held in December 1978 which would include a discussion of the problem.
