Australian petrol supplies were in danger of drying up due to a dispute between independent operator Leo Gorman, Esso and the Transport Workers Union. Mr Gorman had negotiated a deal with Esso to use his own transport and contractors. Malcolm Fraser was Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal party.
