Fighting for land...

The Bjelke-Petersen government sought to wrest control of some Aboriginal reserves from the Federal Government, then led by Malcolm Fraser. The reserves of Aurukun and Mornington Island were subsequently abolished on the 7th of April to circumvent federal moves to make them self managing. The Church mission at Aurukun was subsequently instructed to leave in order to allow Comalco to begin mining a bauxite deposit on the site.
