A new wagon!
After the results of an attempted wage freeze by the Federal Government led to the Ansett
airline being crippled by strikes, the smoke had barely cleared and
Liberal Prime
Minister Malcolm Fraser had to cope with a new third
party led by the former Liberal and Minister in many Liberal
governments - Don Chipp.
On May 9th in Melbourne, Don Chipp addressed a meeting of 6,000
people to set up a third party - the Australian Democrats - the party
won two Senate seats in the half Senate election of 1978. Senator Don
Chipp was the party's first leader.
