Cleaning the chimney...

A contentious issue during the 1976 Victorian State election had been the future of the Newport 'D' power station. At this point The State Electricity Commissiom had agreed to stand by the decision of an independent review board comprising trade union, local resident and environmental representatives. Although two stations has been proposed one station for peak use was the final decision. Rupert Hamer - later Sir - was the Liberal Premier of Victoria and was well known for his social liberalist views. He won a second victory against Labor leader Clive Holding in the 1976 election.
