Ooops, not that door!

Medibank was a health system for all Australians started by the Whitlam Government. Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser and team were facing the cost blow-outs of the government funded Medibank which at the time did not compare well with those of private health funds. The Medibank Private Bill was passed on 1 October, 1976 as was also Medibank Mark II which included a 2.5% levy on income with the option of not paying the levy and taking out private health insurance instead.
