Following the withdrawal of US, Australian and other foreign troops from the Vietnam conflict, South Vietnam's army collapsed and Saigon was captured by North Vietnamese troops on 30th April, 1975. At the time of Saigon's imminent capture, cables to Australia's embassies in Hanoi and Saigon were leaked which made it apparent that the Government's policy at the time was pro-Hanoi and many felt that not only had the Australian public being lied to, but that the people Australia had been claiming to support in South Vietnam had been betrayed.
