Doing a deal!
New Deputy prime Minister of Australia Dr. Jim Cairns had led a
pioneering trade mission to China in May, 1973 when he held the
position of Minister for Overseas trade and Minister for
Manufacturing Industry. In 1974 Australia held a major exhibition
at the Peking Trade Fair in Peking (now Beijing) and Cairns was greeted
by Premier Chou En-Lai.
A reader with a knowledge of Australian history will realise that the
cartoon also implies that Chou En-Lai may have felt that China could
capitalise on Australia's recent purchase of "Blue Poles". This thought
should probably put be put down to cartoonists license!
