During the Olympic years of 1956 and 1968 Hungary and Czechoslavakia had both attempted democratization of their countries. The 1956 student lead revolt in Hungary was put down by the USSR who had control at the time. Warsaw Pact countries lead by the USSR invaded Czechoslavakia to prevent and halt the reforms towards democracy of Alexander Dubceck in 1968.

The cartoon shows the reactions to the situation represented by the Secretary-General of The United Nations - U Thant of Burma (now Myanmar), Prime Minister of Britain - Harold Wilson, and President Lyndon Johnson of The United States of America.
