The United States Presidential Election was to be held in November and encumbent Democrat President Lyndon B Johnson's campaign was pitted against that of Republican Richard Nixon who became his successor. Nixon was elected as the Republican nominee in August with the promise of 'an honourable end to the war in Vietnam'.

The extra hook reference is due to a missing hook in the cartoon of 6th March 1968. The apology is due to the mayhem it (the missing hook) caused.
