First in space, how about first to the moon?

America succeeds in putting a man into orbit. John Glenn was the first American astronaut to orbit the earth on February 20th, 1962. He made three orbits. The Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin was the first human being to be put into space on 12th April, 1961. Now that America had succeeded President and Chairman Nikita Kruschev was anxious to show that the Russians could go one better.

Note: this cartoon was done for the Hobart Mercury, before Geoff started including the hook. If you look carefully you'll be able to see a hand reaching for a rhubarb tin.
